eSpaceS: Ludiciné Symposium on the visual treatment of space across media and digital imageries

University of Montreal, June 19-20 2013 [PDF

Organized by INTEGRAE

Learn more

Study days on the treatment of space in the visual arts. From landscape painting to the fragmented space of cinema, from comics to the three-dimensional worlds of video games, the arts, media and media configurations that host various visual cultures offer a variety of techniques, technologies and technologies methods for representing spaces. For example, Alberti's linear perspective, like the camera and the cinematographic camera, creates articulations between the pictorial plane and the projection plane that differ significantly from those put in place in the various forms of parallel or axonometric projections used in technical drawing and architecture, or orthographic projections used in mapping. In line with the concept of architext, introduced by Gerard Genette to designate "the set of general categories, or transcendent - types of speech, modes of enunciation, literary genres, etc. - of which each singular text falls ", these days of studies allowed to develop a reflection on what it is necessary to name" the archmage "," the whole of the general categories, or transcendent - types of image, modes visualization, pictorial genres, etc. - of which each singular image falls ".

INVASION MONTRÉAL : First international conference about zombie

Université du Québec À Montréal, July 5-7 2012, [Online

Organiszed by Samuel Archibald, Antonio Dominguez-Leiva, Bernard Perron

Learn more

In the wake of the trauma of September 11, 2001 and in the shadow of the SARS pandemic, a real "zombie-mania" began. In the wake of Mr. Brooks' (2003) Zombie Survival Guide, a curious "zombie literature" (the label now exists in several online catalogs) emerges that triumphs in the astonishing best-seller of S. Grahame-Smith who literally zombies Jane Austen's canonical work (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, 2009). In turn invaded by the new wave, the comics, medium that had once been essential in the mythopoetic mutation to the modern zombie, starts from the saga of R. Kirkman The Walking Dead (2003-) in a frenzy zombiephile unprecedented, which in turn feeds the other major postmodern media, television. There is also a plethora of critical studies on this figure hitherto relatively disdained by the university institution.

Faced with such an invasion, and in tune with the proliferation of "zombie studies", this first international conference on the zombie has allowed us to study the figure of the zombie in all spheres of our culture.

Thinking After Dark: Welcome to the World of Horror Video Games

Montreal, April 23-25 2009 [Online

Organized by Ludiciné

Learn more

For several decades, literary and cinematographic works of horror have aroused keen academic interest. But this craze is still not present for the video game treatment of horror. However, since the release of Alone in the Dark in 1992, the "survival horror" has become a prolific genre offering a wide range of video games such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame. Because it is at the crossroads of various cultural heritages, the latest technological developments, and stakes at the base of any video game object (ie space navigation and survival), the horror video game requires a thorough study.

This international colloquium allowed to tackle horror video games from various disciplines and theories.
